A first trip to Japan with skiing in it, January or February 2027, and two names in front of you: Niseko and Hakuba. This page picks one. It also answers the question underneath — what has to be booked now, and what cannot be booked yet, however early you are.
You leave with the region, the 2026-27 dates and lift prices the resorts have published, the 2027 weeks that fill first, and what to do this week. The comparison runs on what a first Japan trip turns on — distance from Tokyo, what the pass covers, what a day costs, which bookings are open today.
Going to Hakuba, and want a lesson in English?
English Private Ski Lesson in Hakuba on Klook
The planning pages put an English-speaking lesson second, right after the bed. This listing is a private ski lesson in English in Hakuba; the resort, length and what is included are on the listing.
Check the Hakuba ski lesson on Klook →Sold on Klook (Klook Travel Technology Limited), an online travel agency. Before you pay, check on the listing: which Hakuba resort and meeting point, the lesson length and level, whether rental and a lift pass are included, and the cancellation terms.

JBJ'S TAKE
Hakuba. For a first Japan trip, Hakuba.
Not on snow. Not on atmosphere — the pages selling you a bed argue that one, and this page can't check it.
On distance. Hakuba is a morning from Tokyo Station. Niseko is a flight, then a coach, then both again home — two days of a first Japan trip in transit.
Two days. On a trip that also wants Tokyo and Kyoto? No. Hakuba.
Getting there from Tokyo — the axis a first Japan trip changes
On a first trip you are almost certainly landing in Tokyo, possibly with city days on either side of the skiing. The two regions are reached in completely different ways, and that is the first thing that moves the decision.
Hakuba: a shinkansen and a bus, under three hours

Tokyo Station to Nagano Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen is about 80 minutes on the fastest trains, roughly an hour and a half on the others. At Nagano, the Alpico express bus leaves from stop 26 at the East Exit and reaches Hakuba Happo in about 70 minutes; the resorts at the northern end of the valley take up to just over two hours. Tokyo Station to resort, about 2 h 50 at best — the valley’s own figure.
A direct winter coach also runs from Shinjuku, about five hours; its 2026-27 timetable is due around mid-November. Whether a rail pass pays for the Tokyo–Nagano out-and-back is the rail pass page’s arithmetic, not this one’s.
Niseko: a flight to New Chitose, then two and a half hours
The airport is New Chitose. From there the Hokkaido Resort Liner reaches Hirafu in 2 h 30, adult ¥6,000 one way, and runs December 1, 2026 to March 30, 2027 on the airport-to-resort leg — dates and price already published, and bookable. A car takes about 2 h 10. The train, through Sapporo, about 3 h 30; the scheduled multi-stop coaches run closer to three and a half hours too, and the Chuo Bus 2026-27 timetable is not posted yet. Whichever you choose, it sits on top of the flight, in both directions.

What each mountain is: four linked areas, or ten resorts on one valley
Both are one lift pass over several ski areas. How those areas sit on the ground is the difference: Niseko’s four share one mountain, Hakuba’s ten are strung along a valley, and that shapes where you sleep as much as where you ski.

Niseko United: one pass, four areas, and a measured 13.5 meters last winter
Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand HIRAFU and Hanazono sit on the same mountain and share the All Mountain Pass. The resort measures snowfall at its 850 m weather station: 13.5 meters over the 2025-26 season, 6.2 of them in January alone, and 15.9 meters in the heavier 2020-21 season. Those are the resort’s own totals for two named winters, not a forecast for this one.

Hakuba Valley: one pass, ten resorts along one valley
Ten resorts take the Hakuba Valley pass — JNTO counts 10 resorts, 106 lifts and over 200 runs. They are spread along one long valley: the bus from Nagano reaches Happo in about 70 minutes and the northern end in just over two hours, so where you sleep decides which resorts are next door and which are a ride away. Hakuba was a venue of the 1998 Nagano Olympics — the ski jumping stadium, and Happo-one.

When: the 2026-27 dates, and the 2027 weeks that fill first
Niseko United’s 2026-27 calendar, marked tentative by the resort: all four areas open November 28, 2026; Annupuri and Grand HIRAFU run to May 5, 2027; Niseko Village closes April 4 and Hanazono April 11. On the Hakuba side, Happo-one is planned for December 1, 2026 to May 5, 2027, and the valley as a whole says its resorts open around December and close between March and early May. Peak is January and February. Niseko prices its peak from December 24 to February 28. For the country-wide month view, snow country included, when to visit Japan has it.

The 2027 weeks that fill first:
- January 1, Friday — New Year’s Day.
- January 9–11 — a three-day weekend; Coming of Age Day is Monday the 11th.
- February 6, Saturday — Lunar New Year: a regional-visitor peak, not a Japanese holiday.
- February 11, Thursday — National Foundation Day.
- February 23, Tuesday — the Emperor’s Birthday.

What the resorts charge: 2026-27 lift passes
Lift passes are the one cost both sides publish for the season, and the one compared here. Beds, lessons and rental are yours to price against your own dates.
| 2026-27, adult, 1 day | |
|---|---|
| Niseko United all-mountain, December 24–February 28 | ¥13,500 |
| Hakuba Valley all-mountain, on sale around November | ¥11,100 |
| Happo-one alone | ¥9,800 |
Outside that peak period Niseko drops: ¥12,600 from December 12 to 23 and March 1 to 22, ¥8,800 in the early and spring periods, ¥6,300 from April 5. A 7-day pass in the peak period is ¥91,500. Why the cheap weeks for the rest of Japan are not the cheap weeks in the mountains is the cheapest-time page’s subject.

How many days, and whether Tokyo or Kyoto fits around it
What the access times settle is what each side charges you in days. Hakuba is about 2 h 50 from Tokyo Station at best — a morning. A Tokyo–Kyoto itinerary can hold a Hakuba block without a flight: leave Tokyo after breakfast, be in the valley before lunch. Niseko is a domestic flight and then a 2 h 30 coach, at each end, so both ends of the block are travel days — and the coach runs only December 1 to March 30.
Count it as ski days plus the transfer each side costs:
- Hakuba: a morning going, a morning coming back.
- Niseko: a day going, a day coming back.
Before the ski bag goes on the shinkansen, read the oversized-baggage rule on the luggage page. And the non-ski night on either side of the block is what a first ryokan night is for.

What has to be booked now, and what cannot be yet
Beds first, then lessons, then transfers — what the planning pages agree on
The planning and booking pages for both regions agree on an order: accommodation first, lessons next, transfers last. The lead times they quote — six to twelve months for a bed, three to six for an English-speaking lesson — are those pages’ figures, not the resorts’, and the same pages say Niseko’s beds are the item that goes first. That is the market talking. What is officially open is the list below.
Bed booked in Hakuba? The lesson is next.
English Private Ski Lesson in Hakuba on Klook
The planning pages' order is bed, then an English-speaking lesson, then transfers. This is a private lesson in English in Hakuba. The valley is ten resorts, so check which one it meets at against where you sleep.

Niseko if… Hakuba if… — and what to do this week
Niseko if…
- Skiing is the whole trip and Tokyo and Kyoto are not in it. The flight and the 2 h 30 coach cost a day at each end; that only hurts when city days are waiting.
- You want four areas on one mountain under one pass.
- You want the transport booked today: the airport coach’s 2026-27 dates and price are already out.
- ¥13,500 a day in the December 24–February 28 period is a price you accept.
Hakuba if…
- Tokyo or Kyoto is in the trip. About 2 h 50 from Tokyo Station at best, and no flight.
- You would rather pay ¥11,100 a day for ten resorts, or ¥9,800 for Happo-one alone.
- You like choosing between ten resorts and are happy to pick where you sleep by which ones you want near.
- You can wait until around November for the day pass and the bus timetable.
JBJ'S TAKE
The bed. This week.
Nearly everything else — Hakuba's pass, the bus timetables — is shut until around November. You can't book them early. Stop trying.
What you can lose is the bed. The planning pages agree it goes first, and the 2027 holiday weeks listed up the page go first of all.
So: dates, bed, done. Niseko-bound? The airport coach is already open — take it. Then close the laptop until November.
The bath at the end of a ski day: onsen etiquette, first time. A phone that works on the mountain: eSIM or pocket wifi.

Three questions that come up
Can you ski in March or April? Yes. Niseko United’s Annupuri and Grand HIRAFU run to May 5, 2027 (tentative), with the all-mountain day pass at ¥8,800 from March 23 and ¥6,300 from April 5; Niseko Village and Hanazono close in April. Happo-one is planned through May 5, 2027. One catch on the Niseko side: the airport coach stops on March 30.
Is there a way to Hakuba from Tokyo without changing at Nagano? Two. The direct winter coach from Shinjuku, about five hours, with its 2026-27 timetable due around mid-November; and a daily JR Azusa limited express that stops at Hakuba Station.
Which airport for Niseko? New Chitose. The resort coach takes 2 h 30, ¥6,000 one way, from December 1, 2026.
Information checked September 2026. Access times from Hakuba Valley, Alpico, Nagano Prefecture, JNTO, Hokkaido Access Network and Grand HIRAFU; 2026-27 dates and lift prices from Niseko United, Grand HIRAFU, Hakuba Valley and the Happo-one operators; snowfall from Niseko United’s own season report; 2027 holidays from the Cabinet Office.
