Nara is less than an hour from both Kyoto and Osaka, and its big halls stop admitting between 16:00 and 17:30. For most first trips that makes it a day trip. A night in Nara pays when one of three things is true: you want the hours before 9:00, you are there on one of the dated evenings, or a second day goes somewhere past the park.
Four conditions settle it, in this order:
- Where you sleep now. Kyoto is about 35 minutes by Kintetsu limited express, Osaka-Namba 35 to 40 by direct Kintetsu train. Neither forces a night.
- What one day holds. Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and Kofuku-ji close by 17:00 or 17:30, wherever you sleep.
- What a night adds. Kasuga Taisha’s grounds open at 6:30 from March to October, Todai-ji’s hall at 7:30. The evening events run on set dates only.
- The tie-break. Bags, check-ins, season.
Going from Kyoto, on the 35-minute train?
Kyoto to Nara Express Train by Kintetsu, on Klook
Kintetsu's limited express runs from Kyoto Station to Kintetsu-Nara in about 35 minutes. Kintetsu lists the fare at ¥760 plus a ¥520 limited express charge, and Kintetsu-Nara is about a five-minute walk from Kofuku-ji.

Before you book, check on the listing what it covers (the fare, the limited express seat or both), the date and train, how you receive the ticket, and the cancellation terms.
First: where you sleep now, and which Nara station you arrive at
Nara has two main stations, and your line decides which. Kintetsu runs to Kintetsu-Nara: about five minutes on foot to Kofuku-ji, 20 to Todai-ji, 25 to Kasuga Taisha. JR runs to JR Nara, about 15 minutes’ walk west of Kofuku-ji; from there, Todai-ji sends you to the city loop bus.
| From | Line and train | Time | Fare (one way) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Station | Kintetsu limited express to Kintetsu-Nara | about 35 min | ¥760 + ¥520 charge = ¥1,280 |
| Kyoto Station | Kintetsu, no limited express | longer | ¥760 |
| Kyoto Station | JR Nara Line, Miyakoji Rapid to JR Nara | about 45 min | check JR West |
| Osaka-Namba | Kintetsu direct to Kintetsu-Nara | about 35–40 min | ¥680 |
| Osaka Station | JR Yamatoji Rapid to JR Nara | about 50 min | check JR West |
Times come from Visit Nara and the Nara City Tourism Association, Kintetsu fares from Kintetsu’s own fare table, checked October 26, 2026. JR West’s fare search would not load for this page, so no JR fare is printed here. The station machine shows it, and an IC card covers it.

Kintetsu’s limited express needs a limited express ticket on top of the basic fare. Kintetsu sells the two together online for its main lines, or the limited express ticket alone with a seat you pick. The Aoniyoshi sightseeing train on the same run adds a special-car fee: ¥1,490 per person when two share a twin seat.

Start point alone never turns Nara into two days. It only picks the station.

Second: what one day holds, by the hour each gate closes
The day ends on the temples’ clocks, not the train’s.
| Place | Hours | Adult fee |
|---|---|---|
| Kofuku-ji, National Treasure Hall and both golden halls | 9:00–17:00, last admission 16:45; combined ticket sold until 16:00 | Treasure Hall ¥900; combined ¥1,600 |
| Todai-ji, Great Buddha Hall | Apr–Oct 7:30–17:30; Nov–Mar 8:00–17:00 | ¥800, cash only |
| Todai-ji, Hokke-do | 8:30–16:00 all year | — |
| Kasuga Taisha, main shrine grounds | Mar–Oct 6:30–17:30; Nov–Feb 7:00–17:00 | special inner visit 9:00–16:00, ¥700 |
| Isuien garden | 9:30–16:30, enter by 16:00; closed Tuesdays | ¥1,200 |
All of them sit within a 25-minute walk of Kintetsu-Nara. Arrive around ten and you have six to seven hours before the last one shuts.

This condition rules one option out. If your list is the halls (the Great Buddha, Kofuku-ji’s treasures, the inner shrine at Kasuga), a night in Nara buys you none of it. They close at the same hour for a hotel guest as for someone who came in on a morning train from Kyoto. A night gives you more Nara only before the gates open and after they close. Whether that matters is condition three.
Isuien is the one to plan around. On a Tuesday it is shut, and on any day you have to be inside by 16:00.

Third: what a night adds, and on which dates
Mornings. Kasuga Taisha’s grounds open at 6:30 from March to October and 7:00 from November to February. The Great Buddha Hall opens at 7:30 from April to October. From a hotel by either station, you can be there when they open. From Kyoto, the same 7:30 means leaving about an hour before it: 35 minutes on the train, then a 20-minute walk.
Evenings. After 17:30 the halls are shut, and what the evening holds depends on the date:
- Nara Tokae: candles around Nara Park, nightly August 5 to 14, 19:00–21:30, per Visit Nara’s listing. The organizer’s own site was down on October 26, so confirm the year’s dates there.
- Kasuga Taisha lantern festivals: about 3,000 lanterns lit on February 3, and again on August 14 and 15.
- Nara Rurie: lights at the Nara National Museum, Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha in the week before Valentine’s Day, 18:00–21:00.
- Nara Light-Up Promenade: every year from July to September, per the city’s tourism association.

Outside those dates, a night in Nara is dinner and a walk near the hotel. A real evening, and one the day-tripper also gets, back in Kyoto or Osaka.

A second day past the park. Here a night clearly earns its place. Horyu-ji is 13 minutes from JR Nara on the JR Yamatoji Line, then 15 minutes on foot or 5 by bus. It is open 8:00–17:00 from February 22 to November 3 and 8:00–16:30 from November 4, adult ¥2,000. Park on day one, a night in Nara, Horyu-ji from 8:00 the next morning. Put it on the same day as Todai-ji and Kasuga instead, and the half hour each way comes straight out of the hours in the table above.

Fourth: the tie-break, bags, one more check-in and the season
If the first three leave it even, practical things decide.
Bags. Nara’s hotels sit near Kintetsu-Nara and JR Nara, the city’s tourism association says, so one night does not mean hauling a case across the park. Moving from Kyoto to Osaka anyway? Kintetsu reaches Nara from Kyoto and runs on to Osaka-Namba, so you can stop on the way: the Nara City Tourist Information Center offers a temporary baggage drop for day visitors.
One more check-in. A night in Nara is one more hotel change. On a short Kansai trip, that is one more morning that starts with packing.

Season. Nara’s tourism association says the park gets crowded in the autumn tourist season and the Saho River is busy in cherry season. It publishes no date for when rooms run out. If your dates fall in either season and you want the night, book the room first and the train second.
A rail pass. One day on the Kintetsu Rail Pass is ¥1,900. The Kyoto–Nara return on ordinary Kintetsu trains is ¥1,520, so the pass does not pay on this trip alone. Whether it pays across a longer Kintetsu week is its own question.

So it works on the day: the train you will actually ride
A worked example: a hotel in Kyoto, a Wednesday in November, Nara as a day trip. The limited express to Kintetsu-Nara takes about 35 minutes at ¥1,280 each way, ¥2,560 return. Ordinary Kintetsu trains cost ¥1,520 return and take longer. Kofuku-ji at 9:00, Todai-ji next (until 17:00 in November), Kasuga Taisha last (also 17:00), and you are back in Kyoto for dinner.
From Osaka-Namba there is little to decide. The direct Kintetsu train is ¥680 each way to the same station.
So the only ticket in this plan that needs buying beyond tapping an IC card is the Kyoto limited express. If you are going from Kyoto and want the 35-minute ride, get that ticket for your date before the morning, from Kintetsu’s own site or through an agency.

Next
Check your dates first. If they include August 5–14, February 3, August 14–15 or the week before Valentine’s Day, or if a second day goes to Horyu-ji, book the night in Nara, then the train. If not, keep your Kyoto or Osaka room and get the Kyoto limited express ticket for the morning you go.
