A day trip gives you just over eight hours at Lake Kawaguchi, and they start late. The first Fuji Excursion from Shinjuku pulls in at 9:28; Fuji City’s long record sees the whole mountain most often at 8 a.m. The last direct train back leaves at 17:41. So the month decides first:
- November to February: a day trip works. The clearest months, and in November the sun sets before the last train.
- March to October, above all June to August: book one night. Only a night puts you at the lake for the morning.
- Two nights if Fuji is the whole point and the date cannot move. In 2024, Fuji City’s 8 a.m. reading found no mountain at all on 118 days.
If it is still level, the room price against a second return fare, and the festival dates, settle it.
Taking the Fuji Excursion, either way?

First: the month you are going
The long record of when Fuji can be seen comes from Fuji City, on the Shizuoka side of the mountain, not from the lakes. It is read at 8 a.m., noon and 4 p.m., and the whole mountain shows up most often at 8. Over more than three decades the pattern is steady: most visible from November to February, least from June to August, with spring haze holding March to May down and typhoons doing the same to September. In 2024 the whole mountain was visible at 8 a.m. on 150 days, about four in ten.
The record is from the other side of Fuji, so read it as the seasons and the hour, not as odds for the lake.

Going between June and August with the mountain as the point? Then a day trip is the weakest way to try. You arrive in the months with the fewest clear days, after the hour that sees the most of them, and leave before the next morning. Either stay the night or plan the day as a lake day that may include Fuji.

Second: the hours the train and the bus give you
The Fuji Excursion runs Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko in about two hours, a few trains each way. Timetable from 14 March 2026:
| To Kawaguchiko | Shinjuku | Kawaguchiko |
|---|---|---|
| No. 3 | 7:30 | 9:28 |
| No. 7 | 8:30 | 10:26 |
| No. 81 (weekends and holidays, to 29 Nov) | 9:02 | 11:15 |
| No. 11 | 9:30 | 11:28 |
| No. 15 | 10:30 | 12:24 |
| No. 93 (weekdays, to 30 Nov) | 11:34 | 13:31 |
| To Shinjuku | Kawaguchiko | Shinjuku |
|---|---|---|
| No. 32 | 14:08 | 16:08 |
| No. 36 | 14:58 | 16:59 |
| No. 94 (weekdays, to 30 Nov) | 15:39 | 17:45 |
| No. 78 (weekends and holidays, to 29 Nov) | 16:12 | 18:29 |
| No. 44 | 16:48 | 18:48 |
| No. 48 | 17:41 | 19:48 (19:40 weekends and holidays) |
On weekends a couple of the other arrivals in Shinjuku shift by a minute or two. The fare is ¥4,200 one way (¥2,580 fare plus ¥1,620 limited express). Seats go on sale one month before the travel date at 10:00, at JR East ticket offices and machines, on eki-net, at Fujikyu stations and through travel agencies. There are no unreserved cars; the railway also sells a seat-unassigned ticket.

The highway bus from Busta Shinjuku costs ¥2,200 (¥2,000 when you pay on the web) and takes about an hour and 45 minutes, traffic allowing. Seats are assigned. Booking opens on the same date one month before and closes 10 minutes before departure. Since 1 October 2026 the route’s two companies sell their own buses: Fujikyu’s on FUJIYAMA CONNECT, Keio’s on Highway Bus.com, and a booking cannot move from one site to the other without cancelling. The timetable changed that day too, so check the last bus back on the site you book.
On No. 3 out and No. 48 back you get 9:28 to 17:41 at the lake, and nearly four hours on the train. Oishi Park, the Fuji viewpoint on the north shore, is about 30 minutes from the station by the retro sightseeing bus, so a visit there takes about an hour of the eight in buses alone.

Third: what one night adds
The morning. In May the sun rises in Kofu, the nearest city the National Astronomical Observatory lists, between 4:32 and 4:54; in November between 6:07 and 6:35. A guest at the lake has those hours and the 8 a.m. one before the first train from Tokyo has even arrived.
The evening, in the long months. In November the sun sets between 16:33 and 16:51, inside a day trip. In May it sets between 18:32 and 18:55, after the 17:41 has gone. From late spring into summer, sunset at the lake is something only a guest sees.

The bath. The railway names the area around Kawaguchiko Station the Fujikawaguchiko Onsenkyo, a hot-spring village. After a soak, the next train you need is the one the following afternoon. The onsen etiquette page covers the rules; your first ryokan night covers what the room price buys.

The north shore without a clock. Oishi Park faces Fuji across the lake. With a night, the half hour of bus each way comes out of a day and a half instead of eight hours.

Fourth, the tie-break: what the night costs, and the dates
A night and a day trip need the same return fare. The night adds the room. A second attempt by day adds another return fare and another four hours of travel, and it still arrives at 9:28.
| Day trip | One night | A second day trip instead | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Return fare | ¥8,400 train / ¥4,400 bus | the same | another ¥8,400 / ¥4,400 |
| Hours in transit | about 4 by train | the same | another 4 |
| Mornings at the lake | none | one | none |
| Sunset in May | no | yes | no |
That makes the comparison simple to run for your date: the room price against ¥4,400 to ¥8,400 and four hours. Only the night buys a morning.

Some dates change it. In 2026 the Fuji Shibazakura Festival ran from 11 April to 24 May, 8:00 to 16:00, at Fuji Motosuko Resort on Lake Motosu, not Lake Kawaguchi. The Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival, around the Momiji Corridor by the lake, ran from 1 to 30 November in 2025, with the light-up from sunset to 21:30, hours after the last direct train. The town’s tourism site, fujisan.ne.jp, posts each year’s dates. The Mt Fuji Marathon runs around Lake Kawaguchi on 12 and 13 December 2026, two days this year.
On any of those dates, look at rooms first. The train seat cannot be bought until a month before.

Booking it: the two versions
The day trip, November to February. No. 3 out at 7:30, and No. 48 back at 17:41, or No. 44 at 16:48 if you want to be in Shinjuku before seven. In November the sun is down before 16:51, so No. 48 covers the sunset.
One night, any other month. Out on No. 11 at 9:30 or No. 15 at 10:30; there is no reason to rush. The afternoon goes to the north shore, the evening to the bath, and the next morning, from first light to about 8, to the mountain. Back on No. 32 at 14:08 or No. 36 at 14:58.
Either version comes down to one purchase with a fixed time: the Fuji Excursion seat, on sale at 10:00 one month before your travel date, or the bus seat from the same date. Once you know which trains you want, that is the moment to book them. Online agencies also sell the reserved seat in English, with a QR code ticket for most routes.

Next
If your date falls between November and February, one month before it at 10:00, book No. 3 out and No. 48 back. Any other month, book the room first and the seats when they open.
Still deciding on the train itself? Is the Fuji Excursion worth it weighs the train on its own. If you would rather not book any of it, a Mt Fuji day tour or on your own covers the coach option. And if Fuji is one day among several, day trips from Tokyo, ranked puts it in order with the others.
