Good to know

Food in Uji means tea. The places here are tea merchants' shops and tea houses, most of them between Uji Bridge and Byodo-in: Tsuen at the east end of the bridge, Nakamura Tokichi's store on the Byodoin Omotesando approach, and Byodo-in's own tea room inside the precinct. For cha-soba (soba made with tea), Tsuen, Nakamura Tokichi Honten and Fukujuen's Uji Tea Workshop all list it.

Where a last order is published, it falls between 16:00 and 17:00. Byodo-in's Sabo Toka is closed Monday to Wednesday except on public holidays, and the Nakamura Tokichi café takes no reservations and shows its waiting list on its own page. A plain bowl of matcha with a sweet is also served at Taiho-an, the city-run tea house on the things-to-do page.
