Good to know
Arashiyama and Sagano are known for tofu. Six of the ten places on this page serve yudofu (simmered tofu), and Shoraian says it uses Saga tofu from Morika. The others are the Zen vegetarian courses at Shigetsu inside Tenryu-ji, hand-cut soba at Arashiyama Yoshimura, Kyoto kaiseki at Kumahiko, and coffee and snacks at % Arabica and inside Randen Arashiyama Station. Most of them stand within a few minutes of Togetsukyo Bridge and Tenryu-ji.
Most kitchens stop early. Shigetsu serves lunch only (11:00–14:00), Yoshimura usually closes at 16:00 on weekdays, and Yudofu Sagano takes its last order at 16:30 and stops when the tofu runs out. For an evening meal on this list, Shoraian is open until 20:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, Kumahiko serves dinner by reservation until 21:00, and the Kyoto Tourist Information Center guide prints Takemura as open until 19:30 and Chikusen until 21:30.
Check the closed day and the booking rule before you walk over. Shigetsu and Takemura close on Thursdays, Chikusen on Thursdays except in April, October and November, Shoraian on Wednesdays (except Golden Week and the autumn foliage season), and Kumahiko on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Shigetsu needs a booking two or three days ahead plus a ¥500 garden fee. Yudofu Sagano takes bookings up to two days before and none from mid-November to early December. Yoshimura and Matsugae both serve special menus from 23 October to 7 December.
