Good to know

Hakone has no single food street, so eat where the day's route puts you. Hakone-Yumoto, at the start of the Tozan line, has the soba restaurants and sweet shops near the station. Gora has tofu katsu. Owakudani, Togendai, Moto-Hakone and Hakonemachi each have a restaurant for lunch on the sightseeing loop, and the Old Tokaido road has a thatched teahouse.

Black eggs are the best-known snack at Owakudani and are said to add seven years to your life per egg. For a meal there, Owakudani Kitchen on the second floor of the ropeway station serves curry and iron-pot dishes.

Most lunch places stop taking orders between 15:30 and 16:00. Closing days to watch: Hatsuhana on Wednesdays, Hakone Teramisu on Wednesdays, Ashinoko Chaya on Thursdays, and Tamura Ginkatsutei on Tuesday evenings and Wednesdays.
