Good to know

Kamakura's food falls into three groups: snacks and sweets on and around Komachi-dori, shirasu (whitebait) bowls in town and on Enoshima, and tea and curry at the temples. Most places on this page close between 16:00 and 19:00. Only the two Tobiccho shops on Enoshima serve until 21:00.

Raw shirasu is seasonal. Tobiccho lists a closed fishing season from 1 January to 10 March and serves raw shirasu only on days it is landed fresh; its boiled (kamaage) shirasu bowl is on the menu at ¥1,320. On Komachi-dori, each shop sets its own hours and many close on one day between Tuesday and Thursday.

For shojin (Buddhist vegetarian) cooking, the one place verified here is Hasedera's Kaikoan, whose Temple Curry the temple says is made on shojin teachings. Hachinoki's own site says its Kita-Kamakura shojin restaurant ran until summer 2022, so older guides that list it as serving shojin are out of date.

Questions

Can I eat raw shirasu all year in Kamakura?

Not at every shop. Tobiccho on Enoshima lists a fishing closed season from 1 January to 10 March and serves raw shirasu only on days it is landed fresh. Its kamaage (boiled) shirasu bowl with raw-seaweed miso soup is on the menu at ¥1,320, tax included.

Can I eat while walking on Komachi-dori?

The Komachi shopping association asks visitors not to enter shops while eating or drinking, to return litter to the shop where they bought it or take it with them, and not to smoke on the street, which is a no-smoking zone. Its home page does not set out a walking rule.

Where can I eat shojin ryori in Kamakura?

Hasedera's restaurant Kaikoan serves a Temple Curry that the temple says is made on shojin teachings (¥1,400, 10:00–16:00, last food order 15:00). Hachinoki's own site says its Kita-Kamakura shojin restaurant operated until summer 2022 and lists its Shinkan branch as kaiseki.

What time do the Komachi-dori shops open and close?

Each shop decides. The shopping association says there is no shared closing day, but many shops close on one day between Tuesday and Thursday. Toshimaya's main shop, which makes Hato Sabure, is open 9:00–19:00 and closes irregularly on Wednesdays except when it is a public holiday.

Where can I eat shirasu on Enoshima, and until what time?

Tobiccho has two shops on the island, the main shop and one on Benzaiten Nakamise-dori. Both are open 11:00–21:00, with last orders at 20:00 on weekdays and 20:30 on weekends and holidays, and may change hours or close in storms.
