Good to know
Pick the base by where you land and which forest you go to first. Miyanoura is where Ferry Yakushima 2 and the direct high-speed boats arrive, about 25 minutes by car from Shiratani Unsuikyo. Anbo is about 5 minutes by car from the Yakusugi Museum, where the Arakawa bus to the Jomon Sugi leaves at 5:00 from March to November, and the Green Hotel there is 10 minutes from the airport. Onoaida and Mugio on the south side are 20–25 minutes from Anbo, near the hot springs and Senpiro Falls. Isso, on the north coast, is about 15 minutes from Miyanoura Port.
Getting there: Japan Air Commuter flies from Kagoshima (about 40 minutes), Fukuoka and Osaka Itami. From Kagoshima's South Pier, the Toppy and Rocket high-speed boats run 6 times a day each way in the October–February timetable; the direct sailings go to Miyanoura in 1 hour 50 minutes, and the Anbo sailings go via Tanegashima. On rough days Anbo sailings can be switched to Miyanoura, as on 23 October 2026, and the final decision to sail is made 1 hour before departure.
Several hotels close for a few days a year: THE HOTEL YAKUSHIMA in January and June, the Yakushima Green Hotel in June and January, and samana hotel for winter maintenance. Rates change by date; check them with each hotel.

An early start for the Jomon Sugi
The first Arakawa bus leaves the Yakusugi Museum at 5:00, about 5 minutes by car from Anbo. Check-out is 10:00 at the Green Hotel and 9:30 at Kouma.

samana hotel is in Onoaida, the village with the public hot spring bath; sankara is in Mugio, about 25 minutes from Anbo Port. Check-out is 11:00 at samana and 12:00 at sankara.

Should I stay in Miyanoura or Anbo?
Miyanoura is where the ferry and the direct high-speed boats arrive, and Shiratani Unsuikyo is about 25 minutes away by car. Anbo is about 5 minutes by car from the Yakusugi Museum, where the Arakawa bus to the Jomon Sugi trailhead leaves, and about 31 minutes from Yakusugi Land.
Where can I buy the Jomon Sugi bus ticket near my hotel?
In Miyanoura, THE HOTEL YAKUSHIMA OCEAN & FOREST and Tashiro Bekkan sell Arakawa bus tickets, and the tourism association's Miyanoura office is by the hotel's entrance (8:30–17:30). In Anbo, the tourism association office is in the town's General Centre (8:30–17:30).
