Good to know
Otaru has four places to stay from. Beside JR Otaru Station (Dormy Inn Premium Otaru is 1 minute on foot, Authent Hotel Otaru 5). On the canal, 7 to 10 minutes on foot from the station (Hotel Nord, Hotel Torifito, OMO5, Hotel Sonia, Etchuya Ryokan). At Otaru-Chikko, the harbour stop before Otaru Station (Grand Park Otaru). Or up in Asarigawa Onsen, about 20 minutes from the station by car, where the ryokan and the hot spring resorts are.
Getting in is the same for all of them: the JR Rapid Airport train runs from Sapporo to Otaru in 32 minutes at the fastest and from New Chitose Airport in 75 minutes, stopping at Otaru-Chikko, Minami-Otaru and Otaru. The hotels themselves quote 80 to 85 minutes from the airport. Asarigawa Onsen is reached by route bus no. 13 from Otaru Station (¥410 adult to Classe) or by a free guest shuttle at Classe and Musashitei; check the shuttle times below before you book.
Hotels near the canal are on Ironai 1-chome. Sakaimachi Street is further along: Otaru Shussemae Square on it is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Otaru Station, and its tourist information centre is 7 minutes from Minami-Otaru Station. A hot spring hotel in the centre is the Dormy Inn or Hotel Sonia; both are listed with their bath hours. Hokkaido and Otaru's accommodation tax has applied since 1 April 2026: ¥300 per person per night under ¥20,000, ¥400 from ¥20,000 to ¥49,999, ¥700 from ¥50,000.
