Good to know

Otaru works as a day trip from Sapporo: the JR Rapid Airport train takes from 32 minutes. The canal, Sakaimachi-dori, the Music Box Museum, Kitaichi Glass and the Bank of Japan Otaru Museum sit in one area, with the canal about 8 minutes and the museum about 10 minutes on foot from JR Otaru Station.

Two places need a bus from the station. Tenguyama Ropeway is about 17–20 minutes away, and the Shukutsu district on the coast (the Former Aoyama Villa, Nishin Goten and the aquarium) is about 20–25 minutes away, each on its own Chuo Bus line.

Dates to plan around: Nishin Goten closes for the season after 23 November, the aquarium is closed 24 November–11 December and reopens for winter on 12 December, and the ropeway changes from its summer to its winter timetable between 3 and 28 November. The Blue Canal lighting starts on 1 November, the Snow Light Path runs 6–13 February 2027, and the Bank of Japan museum is closed on Wednesdays.
