The Partners statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse in front of Cinderella Castle at Tokyo Disneyland.

One day at Tokyo Disney Resort, two parks, and a ticket that opens only one of them. A standard 1-Day Passport is for the park you name when you buy it, and the park cannot be changed afterwards. So the question is not which park is better. It is which park is right for the party you are bringing, on the date you hold — settled before the ticket goes on sale, because it goes on sale two months ahead at 2:00 p.m. Japan time, and there is no booth at the gate to fall back on.

This page runs the conditions in the order they decide it. What you already have. Who is coming. Thrill or classic. The ticket and the date. Then the day itself, so the choice still works when you step off the train at Maihama.

The answer, in the order the conditions decide it

The rule. A first Disney park for anyone in the party, or a small child who will not clear 102cm: Disneyland. Everyone else — adults who have done a Disney park somewhere before, anyone who came for the rides: DisneySea. Two days: one ticket for each park, and stop reading.

1. What you already have. A ticket already names the park — the decision is made. A second day is the other exit: one ticket per park. Everything below is for one day and no ticket yet.

2. Who is coming. Children under 4 enter free at both parks. Disneyland’s height minimums start at 81cm; DisneySea’s at 90cm, and its tallest thresholds run higher than anything at Disneyland. A small child loses more of DisneySea than of Disneyland.

3. Thrill or classic. DisneySea has three attractions at 102cm and three at 117cm, the highest threshold at either park. Disneyland has two at 102cm and nothing above. Disneyland is the castle and seven lands. DisneySea is eight ports around a harbor and a volcano.

4. The ticket and the date. Same price at both parks, set by the date, not the park. Through 2026-10-09 an adult pays ¥7,900–¥10,900; from 2026-10-10 the busiest dates carry a new top tier of ¥12,400.

First: what you already have

The whole comparison exists because of one rule. A standard 1-Day Passport is valid for one designated park. You choose the park when you buy, and a request to change it afterwards is not accepted. A limited-period Park Hopper Passport ended on 2026-03-31 and is not on sale.

So the first condition is not a preference. It is whether the choice is already made. If a ticket is in your account, the park is the one printed on it. If you have two days, the answer is both, one ticket each, and the rest of this page is a matter of which park goes first.

The other thing you already have is the date. Tickets for a calendar date go on sale exactly two months before it, daily at 2:00 p.m. Japan time — tickets for 10 November release on 10 September at 2:00 p.m. JST — and sales of a ticket type can pause without notice once the day’s cap is reached. Fixed flights and a booked room mean your date is already fixed, and the park is the last open variable. If you are still choosing where to sleep, where to stay in Tokyo is decided first; guests at an Official, Partner or Good Neighbor hotel have their own ticket channel.

Second: who is coming

Children under 4 enter both parks free. Above that, the parks differ in what a child can ride, and the resort publishes it as height minimums.

At Tokyo Disneyland the minimums are 81cm (The Happy Ride with Baymax), 90cm (Splash Mountain, Gadget’s Go Coaster) and 102cm (Big Thunder Mountain, Star Tours). At Tokyo DisneySea they are 90cm (Nemo & Friends SeaRider, Flounder’s Flying Fish Coaster), 102cm (Soaring, Tower of Terror, Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure) and 117cm (Indiana Jones Adventure, Raging Spirits, Journey to the Center of the Earth). Measure the child now, against those numbers, and see which park closes more doors.

The other half of this condition is whether it is anyone’s first Disney park anywhere. Disneyland is the one with the castle and the seven lands around it. DisneySea is built around a harbor and a volcano instead, and has no castle at its center.

JBJ'S TAKE

A child under 102cm decides it. Not you.

Bring a small child to DisneySea and its tallest gates — 102cm three times, 117cm three times — shut in front of them. Disneyland starts at 81cm and stops at 102.

No children, first Disney park ever? Still Disneyland. The castle is the thing you came to see once. DisneySea is the park you come back for.

Third: thrill or classic

Counted from the official height minimums, DisneySea’s thresholds run higher, on more attractions, than Disneyland’s: six at 102cm or above, against Disneyland’s two at 102cm and none higher. Tower of Terror and Soaring are 102cm rides; Indiana Jones Adventure, Raging Spirits and Journey to the Center of the Earth, at 117cm, are the tallest bar at either park. Disneyland’s tallest, Big Thunder Mountain and Star Tours, stop at 102cm.

That is the countable half. The rest is what each park is. Disneyland is seven themed lands — World Bazaar, Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Critter Country, Toontown — around the castle. DisneySea is eight themed ports, from Mediterranean Harbor at the gate to Fantasy Springs, the eighth, opened in 2024, and it is the only Disney park in the world themed to the myths and legends of the sea. There is no second DisneySea anywhere.

Where neither park is the answer. If the name you are actually searching for is Universal, not Disney: wrong resort, wrong page. Neither Tokyo park is a substitute for it, and no amount of comparing the two will make one.

Fourth: the ticket and the date

The price is the same at either park and moves with the date — weekday, weekend, season, holiday. Two dated figures, because the schedule changes in October 2026:

  • Through 2026-10-09, 1-Day Passport: Adult (18+) ¥7,900–¥10,900 · Junior (12–17) ¥6,600–¥9,000 · Child (4–11) ¥4,700–¥5,600 · under 4 free.
  • From 2026-10-10, a new top tier on the highest-demand dates: Adult ¥12,400, Child ¥5,900. The official calendar for your month shows which tier your date carries.

Tickets are not sold at the parks. Every ticket is bought in advance for one calendar date, through the official website or app, some travel agencies including online agencies outside Japan, convenience stores in Japan, or the hotel channel for guests at the resort’s own and partner hotels. The release is the two-months-ahead, 2:00 p.m. JST rule above; if the same date does not exist two months earlier, release falls on the 1st of the following month.

On payment: the resort’s own FAQ says some credit cards issued outside Japan may not be accepted on its online payments generally. For park tickets the official purchase page lists PayPay and Alipay alongside credit cards, and the travel-agency channel is the other route to the same dated ticket.

Klook is an online travel agency (Klook Travel Technology Limited, Hong Kong). The resort's FAQ says tickets bought through online travel agencies outside Japan are valid until one month after the admission date, and date changes go through the agency. Choose the park and the date on the listing before you pay.

Hours are date-specific too. There is no standing opening time; each park’s monthly operating calendar is published around the 8th of the preceding month and is subject to change, so read it, or the app, for your exact date. Seasonal decor is on the same clock — what is up in the park belongs to the season you are in, not to the park’s name. The ticket is one line of the trip; the rest of the budget is priced on its own page.

So it works when you land

The nearest JR station is Maihama. Beside it is Resort Gateway Station on the Disney Resort Line, a monorail loop of about 13 minutes with its own stop at each park: Tokyo Disneyland Station, Bayside Station for the hotels, and Tokyo DisneySea Station. Get off at the station your ticket names. The card in your pocket for the trains into Maihama is decided on its own page.

The worked example. Two adults, first trip to Tokyo, both have been to a Disney park at home, one day, Saturday 5 December 2026.

  1. What you already have: no ticket, one day. Open.
  2. Who is coming: no children, no first-timer. Nothing closes DisneySea.
  3. Thrill or classic: they came for the rides. DisneySea.
  4. The ticket and the date: tickets for 5 December release on 5 October at 2:00 p.m. JST. The date falls after 2026-10-10, so the price is whatever the official calendar shows for it — on the new schedule, up to ¥12,400 an adult. Buy at 2:00 p.m. JST on 5 October, for DisneySea, and the day is fixed.

Swap in a six-year-old, or a partner who has never walked under a Disney castle, and step 2 flips the whole thing to Disneyland before step 3 is reached.

JBJ'S TAKE

One day, no kids, done Disney before? DisneySea. Stop comparing.

You have seen a castle. A harbor with a volcano in it, you have not. The eight ports are the day.

First Disney park ever, or a small child in the party: Disneyland, and no apology.

Next

Buy the ticket for the park the conditions handed you, at 2:00 p.m. JST on the release day, and do not reopen the question at the gate — there is no booth there to reopen it at.
