In Miyakojima the base is set by two things: which airport you land at, and whether you will have a car. Hirara town is closest to Miyako Airport: Hotel Torifito is a 3-minute taxi ride or about 10 minutes on foot, and Hotel Atollemerald about 13 minutes by car. Irabu Island is closest to Shimojishima Airport: Watermark Hotel Okinawa Miyakojima is about 5 minutes by car and Arcadia Resort Miyakojima about 10, but they are about 35 and 20 minutes from Miyako Airport.
Flights differ by airport. Tokyu Hotels' access page lists direct flights to Miyako Airport from Haneda (about 3 hours, JTA and ANA), Kansai and Chubu (about 2 hours 30 minutes, ANA), and to Shimojishima Airport from Haneda (about 3 hours, SKY). Transfers also differ: Miyakojima Tokyu runs a free shuttle from Miyako Airport (book at least 3 days ahead) but none from Shimojishima Airport; Seawood Hotel has a free shuttle from Miyako Airport (book by 17:00 the day before); Arcadia gives each room a free rental car and picks guests up at both airports; Hotel Atollemerald has no transfer. Of the hotels here, only Atollemerald and Hotel Locus state a walk to Nishizato-dori, about 10 minutes.
