Good to know
Pick the station first. Hotels at Kintetsu Nara Station are 2 to 3 minutes on foot from the station, and Nara Park is about 8 minutes from it. Hotels at JR Nara Station are connected to it or 3 to 12 minutes from it, and the park is about 20 minutes on foot or a 7-minute ride on the city loop bus. Naramachi stays are 12 to 15 minutes from Kintetsu Nara, and the Nara Park side (Nara Hotel, FUFU Nara, Tsukihitei) is a taxi ride of 5 to 10 minutes from either station.
Many visitors come as a day trip. JR Nara Line rapid trains take 45 minutes from JR Kyoto Station, and Guesthouse Naramachi gives Osaka at 50 minutes and Kyoto at 60 by JR or Kintetsu. The sights stop admitting early: the Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall closes at 17:00 from November, Kofuku-ji takes its last entry at 16:45 and Horyu-ji closes at 16:30 from 4 November. If you want to be in Nara in the early morning or after the temples close, you need a bed there.
