Good to know

A Gion stay is a choice between four bases: inside Gion near Yasaka Shrine and the Shirakawa, up the Higashiyama slope toward Kiyomizu-dera, along Sanjo, or across the river at Shijo-Kawaramachi. The 14 below are listed in that order. Rates are not shown because they change daily; check-in and check-out times appear only where the hotel's own page states them.

Stations decide most of the difference. Gion's hotels use Keihan Gion-Shijo, from 2 minutes (Kyoto Granbell Hotel) to 15 minutes (Motonago) on foot, with Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi 7 to 18 minutes away. There is no subway station in Gion itself; the Tozai line stops at Sanjo-Keihan and Higashiyama. From Kyoto Station, the hotels' pages give 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, or city bus 100 or 206 to the Gion stop (25 minutes on Gion Fukuzumi's page). On foot, Kiyomizu-dera's page gives 10 minutes from the Gojozaka and Kiyomizu-michi bus stops and about 25 minutes from Keihan Kiyomizu-Gojo.

Two things to know before booking. The Where to Stay in Kyoto guide lists the last city bus 206 from the Gion stop at 21:56 on weekdays and 21:58 on Saturdays and holidays, so a late evening in Gion ends on foot or by taxi. And Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion announces construction on the adjacent plot from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2028, 8:00 to 18:00. For the whole city, including Kyoto Station, Downtown and Arashiyama, read that guide first; this page covers only the hotels around Gion.

The four bases side by side

Walk times and Kyoto Station times are the ones the hotels print on their own pages; where a page does not state one, the cell says so. The evening column uses the last-service times in the Where to Stay in Kyoto guide.
