Good to know

Matsuyama has two tai-meshi. The Matsuyama style cooks the sea bream with the rice in a clay pot; the Uwajima style puts slices of raw sea bream, mixed with sauce and egg, over hot rice. In Dogo you can try both within a short walk: Akiyoshi for the cooked style, Kadoya Dogo Ekimae for the raw one.

Botchan dango, three dango on one skewer, are a Matsuyama sweet; Tsuboya, founded in 1883, is named as where they began. For mikan, 10FACTORY has shops on Okaido and in Dogo, and Orange BAR at Matsuyama Airport squeezes seasonal citrus. Fresh-squeezed mikan juice depends on the citrus season.

Akiyoshi and Gansui close for the day when the sea bream sells out, and most tai-meshi shops here take a break between lunch and dinner. Akiyoshi closes on Wednesdays and Tsuboya on Tuesdays.

Questions

What is the difference between Matsuyama and Uwajima tai-meshi?

Matsuyama-style tai-meshi cooks the sea bream with the rice; at Akiyoshi it is made in a clay pot and finished with broth like ochazuke. Uwajima-style tai-meshi is raw: at Kadoya, thin slices of sea bream are mixed with the house sauce and egg and poured over rice.

Where can I eat Botchan dango in Dogo?

Tsuboya Kashiho, founded in 1883, sells boxes from 2 pieces (¥280) and has four seats; it is open 9:30–18:00 and closed on Tuesdays. my botchan dango 3◯ lets you put together your own and is open until 19:00, or 21:00 on Saturdays and holidays.

Can I get fresh mikan juice all year?

Not always freshly squeezed. 10FACTORY Dogo has posted that last season's fresh-squeezed juice has ended and will return next mikan season. Orange BAR at Matsuyama Airport squeezes seasonal citrus on the spot.

Where can I eat jakoten?

Kadoya Dogo Ekimae lists Uwajima jakoten, a fried fish-paste cake, on the same menu as its Uwajima-style tai-meshi.
