Good to know

Start with barazushi, Okayama's festival sushi of fish and vegetables mixed into vinegared rice. Azuma-zushi in the station building serves it until 21:30, and Ekiben Nigiwai sells it as a station bento from 7:00. Fukuzushi on the west side makes the full version only if you book three business days ahead.

Demi-katsu-don, a pork cutlet bowl under demi-glace sauce, is listed by the prefectural tourism site as having started at Katsudon Nomura, founded in 1931. Okayama chuka soba came out of street stalls in the city centre just after the war; the four shops here run from weekday lunch only (Tenjin Soba) to last orders at 23:30 (Noraneko Shokudo).

Fruit parfaits use Okayama white peaches in summer and grapes such as Shine Muscat from August into autumn. The Fruit Parfait Town Okayama campaign lists more than 30 shops; the five here are at the station, around Tenmaya and by the castle and Korakuen. For kibi dango, Koeido's main shop has a café. Hiruzen yakisoba, a miso-sauce yakisoba from the north of the prefecture, is eaten in Hiruzen and is not on this city list.

Questions

What is Okayama barazushi and where can I eat it near the station?

Where did demi-katsu-don start?

The prefectural tourism site lists Katsudon Nomura, founded in 1931, as the original shop. It is about 10 minutes on foot from JR Okayama Station, open 11:00–15:00 Tuesday to Friday and 11:00–14:30 and 17:00–20:30 at weekends and on holidays, and closed on Mondays.

When can I get a white peach or Muscat parfait in Okayama?

The Granvia lounge serves its white peach parfait from 7 July until the last peaches arrive, and Muscat Factory's Shine Muscat parfait runs from 1 August. FRUITS-J BOUTIQUE moves from white peaches in summer to grapes in autumn and early winter and strawberries in winter and spring.

What is Okayama ramen like?

The prefectural tourism site says Okayama ramen began in street stalls and huts in the city centre right after the war. Fujiya's is a slightly sweet soy sauce ramen, Asazuki's a rich pork-bone soy sauce with a tonkatsu on top, and Tenjin Soba and Noraneko Shokudo use a chicken-based soy sauce soup.

Where can I try Hiruzen yakisoba?

Hiruzen yakisoba is a speciality of the Hiruzen area in the north of the prefecture, fried in a miso-based sauce with chicken and cabbage. It is not on this Okayama city list; the prefectural tourism site's Hiruzen yakisoba page links to the shops that serve it.
