From Kyoto, Kinosaki Onsen works as a day trip. The Limited Express Kinosaki gets you there in about 2 hours 20 minutes, with no change, and four of the public baths open at 7:00.
From Osaka it’s about 2 hours 40 on the Konotori. Some of those trains stop short at Fukuchiyama, so check that yours runs through.
Book a night if you want the baths after dark. Two of them open only at 15:00, all of them close at 23:00, and most inns give guests a free pass to every bath.
It’s six baths right now, not the seven most guides count. One has been shut since 2024, and another is closed for repairs until October 30, 2026.
The ¥12,000 Kansai Wide Area Pass costs more than a Kyoto round trip to Kinosaki. Add one more long JR ride that week and it comes out ahead.

JR West Kansai Wide Area Pass (5 days), on Klook
The Kansai Wide Area Pass covers 5 consecutive days of JR West trains, Kinosaki Onsen included. It only beats single tickets when Kinosaki is one of two or more long rides.
Check the Kansai Wide Area Pass on Klook →Sold on Klook (Klook Travel Technology Limited), an online travel agency. JR West lists the pass at ¥12,000 for adults and ¥6,000 for children (prices as of August 1, 2024), for 5 consecutive days, and only for foreign passport holders entering Japan as Temporary Visitors. Before you book, check on the listing which package you're choosing (one adds a Kinosaki 3-day pass), how you exchange the voucher for the pass in Japan, and the cancellation terms.
Where you start: Kyoto, Osaka, or the bus

The Limited Express Kinosaki runs from Kyoto Station straight to Kinosaki Onsen. The town’s ryokan association puts the ride at about 2 hours 20 minutes. Ekitan’s guide says about 2 hours 30.
Every ordinary seat on it is reserved, so book one before you board. For part of the run the train can be coupled to another limited express, then split at Fukuchiyama. Check the car number on your ticket. Sitting in the half that heads somewhere else is the easy mistake here.
From Shin-Osaka and Osaka, the Konotori takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. It runs more than ten round trips a day. Some go all the way to Kinosaki Onsen and some end at Fukuchiyama, where you’d change for the last stretch.
From Kyoto, the one-way ticket was ¥5,170 on a regular-season date: a ¥2,640 fare plus ¥2,530 for the reserved seat (checked October 1, 2026). The seat charge moves with the season. Price the Osaka leg on JR West before you compare anything.
Either way, a day trip spends close to five hours on the train.
Rule the highway bus out for a day trip. It takes about 3 hours 40 from Kyoto Station and about 3 hours 10 from Osaka Umeda, so six or seven hours go to the road. For a stay, it’s a way in that doesn’t need a rail ticket.
From Kinosaki Onsen Station, you can walk to the inns. The ryokan association also runs a shared bus for guests. The walk to Kono-yu takes 15 to 25 minutes.
What one day holds: six baths, and the day each one shuts

These are the hours the Kinosaki Onsen Ryokan Association lists, checked October 27, 2026.
| Bath | Open | Closed on |
|---|---|---|
| Ichino-yu | 7:00–23:00 | Wednesday |
| Goshono-yu | 7:00–23:00 | Thursday |
| Jizo-yu | 7:00–23:00 | Monday |
| Kono-yu | 7:00–23:00 | Tuesday; shut for repairs May 11 to October 30, 2026 (planned) |
| Mandara-yu | 15:00–23:00 | Wednesday |
| Yanagi-yu | 15:00–23:00 | Thursday |
Last entry is 30 minutes before closing, so 22:30. One bath costs ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children. The Yumepa day pass is ¥1,500, or ¥750 for a child. Every bath window sells it, and it covers all of them for the day. Two baths in, it’s already the cheaper choice.
Satono-yu, the seventh bath in older guides, has been closed since spring 2024. The association’s list now has six. Kono-yu’s reopening date is a plan, not a promise. While it’s shut, Mandara-yu opens on its Wednesday day off.
Match the weekday to the table. On a Wednesday or a Thursday, two baths are shut and four are open. On Monday and Tuesday you lose one. Friday through Sunday, all six should be open once Kono-yu is back.

The two 15:00 baths shape the day. Spend the morning in the four early ones. Mandara-yu and Yanagi-yu open mid-afternoon, and after them it’s about 2 hours 20 back to Kyoto. Look up the last train home on JR West before you plan a late soak.
The ropeway keeps its own hours. From November 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027, the last car up leaves at 16:30 and the last one down at 16:50. Weather can change that.
Bring a towel, or rent or buy one at the bath. Soap and shampoo are inside.
What a night adds: the baths after dark, and the pass

Most inns in Kinosaki give guests a free pass to the public baths. The town’s official visitor site said so when checked in September 2026. It does the job of the ¥1,500 Yumepa.
The terms are each inn’s own. One inn’s plan page lists its pass from 15:00 check-in until 13:00 the next day, after checkout. Make sure your plan includes it before you book.

The pass is half of it. The hours are the rest. With a room in town, Mandara-yu and Yanagi-yu are a walk away after dinner, right up to 22:30. The four 7:00 baths open before breakfast.

A ryokan room comes with a yukata and an obi, plus a tanzen over it in the cold months. Dinner is served in your room or in a dining room. A day trip can’t give you the evening in that yukata between baths.

Room rates change with the inn and the date. Weigh the rate you’re quoted against what it buys: baths after dark, the morning ones, and no last train to catch. What a first ryokan night includes is in Your First Ryokan Night.
First public bath? Read onsen etiquette before you go, the tattoo rule included.
Pass or single tickets: when the Kansai Wide Area Pass pays

JR West sells the Kansai Wide Area Pass at ¥12,000 for adults and ¥6,000 for children 6 to 11 (prices as of August 1, 2024). It runs 5 consecutive days on JR West trains in its area, and Kinosaki Onsen is in it. Limited expresses such as the Konotori and the Haruka are covered on reserved seats you book before boarding.
It’s only for foreign passport holders entering Japan as Temporary Visitors. You show the passport to get it. Highway buses aren’t covered.
A Kyoto round trip to Kinosaki is ¥10,340. The pass costs ¥1,660 more. For Kinosaki alone, buy single tickets.
One more long ride flips it. The Haruka one-way ticket from Kansai Airport to Kyoto is ¥2,200 for foreign visitors. Put that with the Kinosaki round trip and you’re at ¥12,540, which is ¥540 more than the pass. A Himeji day or a Shinkansen run to Okayama inside the same five days widens the gap.
So the line is simple. If Kinosaki is one of two or more long JR rides within five days, the pass is the cheaper ticket. If it’s your only one, it isn’t. The rest of the comparison is in the Kansai pass guide.

A Saturday from Kyoto, worked through

Say you’re in Kyoto, your free day is a Saturday in November, and Kinosaki is the only long ride that week. All six baths should be open by then.
- Buy single tickets and reserve a morning seat on the Limited Express Kinosaki. Check the car number.
- Walk into town from the station, 15 to 25 minutes to Kono-yu.
- Buy the Yumepa at the first bath window, ¥1,500.
- Do Ichino-yu, Goshono-yu, Jizo-yu and Kono-yu first, then Mandara-yu and Yanagi-yu after 15:00.
- Ride the ropeway before the 16:30 last car up.
- Take the train home you looked up on JR West before leaving.
Same Saturday as a night: the inn’s pass takes the place of the Yumepa, and the two afternoon baths move to after dinner.
Next
Check your free day against the closing days in the table, then reserve the seat. If Kinosaki shares the week with the airport run or Himeji Castle, price the pass before you buy single tickets.
