Naha's public market: fish, meat and other produce on the ground floor, restaurants upstairs. Under the 'mochiage' system you buy fish or meat downstairs and a second-floor restaurant cooks it; the cooking charge depends on the dish and is paid at the restaurant. The shop list includes a sata andagi stall.

A soba shop whose handmade noodles are still kneaded with the clear liquid from dissolved wood ash, cut by hand, in a light, slightly sweet broth. The taste is described as unchanged since the Meiji era.

Shabu-shabu of Kin Agu pork, which the restaurant says is DNA-tested and certified as the Ryukyu native Agu breed, and Ishigaki beef, with Okinawan vegetables.

A steak house open since 1953. Steak became an everyday meal in Okinawa after the war, when imported beef was cheap and easy to get. No reservations; there is no fixed last order.

10King Tacos, Kin main shopキングタコス 金武本店
Taco rice · Kin
Kin, on the central east coast, is said to be where taco rice began: taco filling, cheese, lettuce and tomato on rice. The King Tacos main shop draws many visitors; the Shinkaichi streets nearby, in front of the former Gate 1 of Camp Hansen, show the strong influence of American culture.

A&W has been in Okinawa since 1963; this drive-in store opened in August 1969 and has 84 non-smoking seats. Drive-in service is partly restricted.

The maker of the original beni imo (purple sweet potato) tart. This shop has a tart production line you can watch through glass, and a café on the second floor.

An awamori distillery in Shuri, two minutes' walk from Shuri Castle's Keisei-mon gate, with tours and a shop. There are no tour receptions on Sundays, and no phone enquiries on weekends: go in person.

17Orion Happy Park (Orion Beer Nago factory)オリオンハッピーパーク

Brewery tours of Orion Beer's Nago factory, by reservation only, ending with up to two glasses per person; drivers and under-20s get soft drinks. The site also has the Yanbaru no Mori beer restaurant and a shop.

Good to know
Most of this list is in Naha. Makishi Public Market, Pork Tamago Onigiri, Okashi Goten and Blue Seal are on or just off Kokusai-dori, a walk from Makishi or Kenchomae Station on the Yui Rail. Sakaemachi Market is in front of Asato Station, and Shuri has two Okinawa soba shops and the Zuisen awamori distillery.
Okinawa soba is made from wheat flour, not buckwheat, usually in a bonito or pork broth with pork on top. The soba shops here close when the day's noodles run out: Shuri Soba serves from 11:30 to 14:00 and is closed on Thursdays and Sundays; Shimujo is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Kin (taco rice), Motobu (Kishimoto Shokudo) and Nago (the Orion brewery) are outside Naha and easiest by car. Dates to plan around: Makishi Public Market is closed on Sunday 25 October 2026, and Jackie Steak House from 9 to 12 November and on 31 December 2026.

All three close when the noodles run out, so go at lunchtime. Shuri Soba is closed on Thursdays and Sundays, Shimujo on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Kishimoto Shokudo in Motobu is a drive of about 2 hours 30 minutes from Naha Airport.
Late at night
A&W Makiminato is open until 2:00, Mikado until midnight, and Jackie Steak House takes its last guests at 22:00. Sakaemachi Market's bars open in the evening.

How does the mochiage system at Makishi Public Market work?
You choose fish or meat at a ground-floor shop and pay for it there, then take it to a restaurant on the second floor, which cooks it and charges for the cooking. The charge depends on the dish. Ask the shop which items can be cooked this way. Last order for mochiage cooking is 19:45; the restaurants take last orders at 20:00.
Where did taco rice start, and where can I eat it?
Okinawa's official tourism site says taco rice is held to have started in Kin town, in the centre of the main island. The King Tacos main shop in Kin is open 10:30–21:00, about 2 minutes on foot from the Kin-Iriguchi bus stop.
Is Okinawa soba made from buckwheat?
