Good to know

Start with chicken nanban. Ogura Honten on Tachibana-dori is the shop its own chain calls the place where the dish began, and Grill Ranman was opened by the chef of the restaurant London, where the dish is said to have been created around the 1960s. Ogura Honten closes on Tuesdays and on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays; Ranman closes on Tuesdays.

For jidori, Suisen grills local chicken over Unama binchotan charcoal, about 5 minutes on foot from the west exit of Miyazaki Station, and Gunkei has a late-opening main restaurant (until 24:00) and a station-area branch open from midday. Three Miyachiku restaurants on this list serve Miyazaki beef, from a counter over the Oyodo River to a restaurant in a pine grove.

The late-night side of central Miyazaki is Nishitachi: Karamenya Rin (until 2:00, 3:00 on Fridays and Saturdays), Kurobe for gyoza and Fruit Ohno for parfaits. Fruit Ohno uses fresh mango from April to August and frozen mango from September to March. Most places on this list publish only irregular closing days, so check before a special trip.
