Good to know

Start at Hirome Market. It is an indoor food hall with around 60 eateries where you buy at the stalls and sit at shared tables; it opens at 10:00 (9:00 on Sundays) and stays open until 23:00. The prefectural tourism site lists katsuo no tataki, inaka-sushi, fried chicken and gyoza among its popular dishes, and the Myojinmaru stall inside serves straw-seared katsuo.

Katsuo no tataki is Kochi's best-known dish: thick fillets seared over a fire fed with rice straw, served with ponzu and salt, with sliced garlic, ginger and onion. The tourism site says katsuo can be eaten all year but is tastiest in early summer and late autumn. Sawachi ryori, assorted dishes on a very large platter, is listed at Tosa no Kuni Nijuyomman-goku. Yuzu shows up in obanyaki and juice at the Sunday Market and in the yuzu katsuo sushi at the same izakaya.

Check the closed days. Kuroson is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays; Sou-An is closed Mondays; Tosa Cha Cafe on Wednesdays. For mornings, the Sunday Market stalls open from 5:00 (April–September) or 6:00 (October–March) and Sou-An serves breakfast from 8:00.
